The Original Noughties It-Bag

The Mombasa was introduced by Tom Ford for Yves Saint Laurent's Spring/Summer 2002 collection, becoming one of the defining It bags of the early 2000s. Its relaxed crescent-shaped body and distinctive sculptural handle gave the design an immediately recognisable silhouette, while its name referenced the Kenyan port city.

The bag was an immediate commercial success, selling out shortly after launch and generating waiting lists at Saint Laurent boutiques. Its success was particularly significant for YSL, helping establish accessories as a much more important part of the house's business during Ford's tenure.

This canvas-and-leather interpretation is a more relaxed take on the original Mombasa, combining the signature slouchy silhouette with a large embroidered YSL monogram and natural wood handle. With Saint Laurent having revived the Mombasa for Spring 2026, the original Tom Ford-era designs have gained renewed relevance as part of the current return to early-2000s fashion

Material: Black canvas body with leather trim, sculptural wooden handle and gold-tone hardware.

Features: Signature curved Mombasa silhouette, oversized embroidered YSL monogram, contrasting natural wood top handle and adjustable leather shoulder straps.

Condition: Good

This bag presents in good vintage condition overall, with mild signs of previous use consistent with its age. Specific notes are as follows:

Fabric body is in good condition overall, with only mild signs of wear. There is some faint staining towards the left side of the front logo, as pictured.
Leather is in good vintage condition, with some faint marking, light scuffing and subtle signs of warping and cracking around the handle attachments. These are visible in the imagery but are not severe.
The embroidered YSL logo to the front is in very good condition, with no fraying or staining.
Rear fabric is in good condition, while the base shows faint signs of wear.
Leather opening trim is in good condition, with some faint signs of natural ageing.
Horn handle is in good condition, with the metal plate showing only faint scratching.
Metal hardware throughout is in generally good condition with minimal signs of use consistent with age.
The interior is in very good condition, with the interior clasp and branding also remaining in very good condition.

Once your bag is on its way, you'll receive a tracking link by email so you can follow it from our hands to yours. We ship worldwide; international buyers may be liable for import duties or taxes levied by their destination country at the point of arrival.

If your bag isn't quite right, you may return it within 14 days of delivery for a refund. Returns must be sent back in the exact condition received, with all accompanying items (dust bag, authenticity card and packaging where supplied), and with the EBV London security tag attached and intact. Return postage is arranged by you using a fully tracked and insured service — we recommend Royal Mail Special Delivery within the UK or DHL Express internationally.
